Paul vs Tyson…the salaciously anticipated “main event” pitting the aging boxing legend “Iron” Mike against social media frat boy and up and coming boxer, Jake Paul. What transpired in the arena ended up as a merciful swan song for Tyson. I mean really, who wanted to see a 27 year old KO a 58 year old man who seemed to be perpetually nibbling on his left glove? Even Paul, for all the smack talk leading up to the fight understood the optics of this seminal moment streaming live from the AT&T Stadium’s make shift coliseum of 72,000 in attendance in Arlington, TX.
I should note there was a brief(less) “‘behind’ the scenes” locker room moment unintentionally caught on camera of Tyson, the visual of which cannot be unseen…but did “crack” us up…hehe. 😁
So, why would Tyson step back into the ring after nearly 2 decades of retirement from professional boxing? Polymarket odds had Paul winning by a sizable margin. For that, it seems the question really is, “What’s in YOUR wallet?” Tyson’s rumored take home of $20m is a tidy retirement bonus for the abbreviated set of 8, 2 minute rounds. And Paul, whose purse stretched to reportedly twice that amount, gleaned something even more priceless. Publicity.
As for the platform, this turned out to be an obscenely expensive Netflix flex that leaned heavily on pimping their stars and hawking their lineup. However, for all their garish self promotion, the arena of public opinion pulled no punches regarding Netflix’s choice of ringside commentator who repeatedly annoyed viewers with lame puns and phrases like, “making ‘her’story” and even more so for their live stream that struggled and sputtered throughout the event. Undisputed champ of live streaming Netflix is not. But at least they got in the ring.
Now, what’s this I hear about a Shaq vs Gronk match up? 😎
